At the core of Choo Yilin, so much of what we have done has always been to tell the stories of our grandparents’ and their grandparents’. In light of this, when YTL Hotels invited us to collaborate and create a collection of fine keepsakes inspired by their luxury spaces, it was extremely clear that we had to choose both the Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Express and The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur.  We went on a journey of rich discovery with full-time travel personalities (and the sweetest couple!), Amelyn Beverly and Dan, and we wanted to share our experience with you.

To celebrate the launch of our Vintage Honeymoon Capsule Collection, Choo Yilin is hosting a luxury stay giveaway with YTL Hotels this September!

The luxury cabins of the E&O Express evoke a nostalgic feeling of a time past, where the colours and textures of the spaces hint at the best of European luxury. The interiors of the cabins are incredibly lavish, featuring Jim Thompson’s Thai silk.

Be transported back to the 1930s as you take in the opulent facade and interiors of The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The Cigar Room and The Drawing Room strongly emulate the colonial nostalgia, while the hotel's famous afternoon tea features a decadent spread of scones, jams and dainty finger sandwiches which are quintessentially English; they also serve hot savouries that are made with an Asian twist.

THE VINTAGE HONEYMOON CAPSULE COLLECTION

The Vintage Honeymoon Capsule Collection was inspired by these two spaces, and more precisely, the women that would capture the spirit of these two spaces. Thus, we dug deep into the types of jewellery were popular in the 1930s, and we decided to use two classic styles — the sautoir necklaces and the seed pearl halos. We then took these historically significant pieces and added our own contemporary Southeast Asian flair.

The sautoir necklace first made an appearance during the turn of the 20th century in Europe, before getting increasingly popular in the Art Deco age. The contemporary appeal is such that there are multiple ways to wear and style it. Some examples include:

Besides pearls, which were something original sautoir necklaces would feature, we’ve also chosen to pair this design with our signature gemstone — Type A jadeite.

At the turn of the 19th century, seed pearls were widely used in halos of jewellery pieces. Pearls were actually considered more valuable than diamonds at one stage, because cultured pearls had yet to be discovered. Today, modern jewellery often feature diamond halos.

We honour this piece of history by combining seed pearls and diamonds around Type A custom-cut ice jadeite cabochons; a nod to both our colonial heritage and our modern-day Southeast Asian present — just as both The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and the Eastern & Oriental Express have done.
