Heritage at the Heart: The Nikah - A Declaration of Love
Perhaps one of the most beautiful things about love is that it is a language we all speak; it is boundless, and every culture in the world has their own traditions, expressions and ways of celebrating it.
In our fourth instalment of Heritage at the Heart, Choo Yilin x En Pointe delve into the rich Malay heritage, and explore the ways of celebrating love through a Nikah. Malaysian TV presenter and model Ain Edruce becomes a ravishing bride for this styled photoshoot.
The Nikah is the solemnisation ceremony where a groom formally declares that he is ready for marriage to his bride. It is during this ceremony that the couple is officially pronounced husband and wife in front of the couple’s loved ones.
The bride wears Choo Yilin’s Kebaya Jade Donut Necklace in solid gold, framed in silhouettes of delicate lace.
The bride’s hantaran includes a Choo Yilin icon - The Peranakan Lace Jade Bangle, handcrafted in solid gold and Type A Jadeite.
On this once-in-a-lifetime occasion, the bride dons an intricate and elegant creation from renowned Malaysian Designer, Nurita Harith, and thoughtfully pairs pristine white lace with fine jade heirlooms from her hantaran.
In the Malay culture, there are two types of hantaran observed:
“duit hantaran” is somewhat a “dowry” given by the groom to the bride’s parents, and “barang hantaran” is a betrothal gift from the heart from the groom to the bride (and vice versa), a practice similar to the Chinese Guo Da Li 过大礼.
The dais is contemporary and luxurious with an arrangement of romantic florals in soft pinks and lush greens that match the hand-picked bridal bouquet.
The atmosphere is filled with love and joy as the radiant bride makes her appearance at the grand Private Room of the Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur, and the groom cannot take his eyes away from her.
